Woodlands Hospice celebrated 10 years of caring and supporting patients and their families on our Inpatient Unit on Thursday 6th June 2019!
Our Inpatient Unit has 15 beds for people who have complex Palliative Care needs which may include physical, emotional, psycho-social, spiritual and rehabilitation needs, as well as complex symptom management in last days of life. We support adults (aged over 18) living with life-limiting illnesses including Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease, Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Our care is provided by a Consultant-led multi-professional clinical team.
In the last 10 years, our staff and volunteers on the ward have:
- Cared for approximately 3457 patients with complex Palliative Care needs, supporting their families and loved ones
- Received over 4000 admissions to the ward*
- Served patients with approximately 183,192 delicious, freshly cooked meals - that’s a lot of spuds to peel!
- Celebrated numerous special occasions with patients and loved ones including birthdays, anniversaries, communions and even weddings
*Some patients are admitted to our Inpatient Unit more than once.
Our Clinical Lead, Kate Marley who was with us when the ward opened 10 years ago as a first year registrar, had these lovely words to say,
“I always say to patients and those close to them that once you are part of our family at Woodlands you stay part of our family forever. Just think of all the people whose lives we have touched over the last ten years and extending to outpatient services over the last 23. What a huge family we have.”
We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our staff, volunteers, patients and their loved ones for making the last 10 years on our ward so special! We’d also like to thank everyone who has contributed to our ward’s success, including our supporters within the local community, who have and continue to support Woodlands Hospice, allowing us to continue providing our wonderful services!
